Multilingual Folk Tale Database

Welcome to the Multilingual Folk Tale Database. On this site, you can read popular folk tales from all over this world, in their original or a translation. To organize the stories and make it easier to find and compare them, the stories have been classified along the Aarne-Thompson-Uther classification, which is the established standard for folk tales. Despite the fact that our database contains over 10.000 stories and translations, at this time, only a portion of the ATU classes have example stories in our database.

Originally, this service was set-up to allow people to share folk tales in their native language, or provide translations for stories already in the database. Unfortunately, the site was hacked, and until further notice, it is not possible to submit or correct stories online. We are still working to improve the new interface, any suggestions are welcome.

The folk tales on this website were collected by a team of people from various source. We neither own nor translated these stories ourselves, but all stories on this site should either be out of copyright, or provided to us with the right to distribute them. In case we overlooked some copyrighted material, please let us know so we can remove it from the database.
