The Unqualified Judge

One day Canary and Crow get into an argument about how can sing best. "Well," Canary says when he is fed up with the debate, "this is not working. We have to find a judge."

"Good," says Crow, "we will ask the first animal we encounter."

They fly away and spot Pig bathing in a mud pool. Canary explains their problem. "Mmm," Pig says, "well… sing."

Canary tilts his head, and sings about the sun and the golden day, until all the other birds fall quiet, the wind dies down to listen, and even the old willow tree bends his branches.

But Crow sits next to Pig and scratches his back with his long, strong nails so that Pig moans "yeah" from pleasure, and he caws into his ear: "Caw caw caw!"

"Oh," says Pig without even thinking twice. "Crow can sing the best."

Canary sadly shakes his head and says: "That's what you get when a canary allows a pig to judge over him." Then he spreads his wings and flies away.
